George Street is a lively pedestrianised shopping area in Hove. It has all the usual shops and bars you’d expect for a neighbourhood shopping area and is free of all traffic until 6pm everyday.
Councillors have been discussing a plan to change the pedestrianised ending hours from 6pm to 4pm; since a local Tesco brought in charges for use of their car park. This car parking charge has inadvertently affected local traders with their takings being effected by between 10-30% as some residents say there is not enough parking in the area. However mobility challenged shoppers thought it would be a great idea to allow them to drive directly onto the street after 4pm.
There has been support for the proposal with a petition signed by over 2600 supporters. A street questionnaire also showed 74% support to the proposed change.
